Scholarships

The Hispanic Bar Association of Houston currently administers three different scholarship programs (one for each class year) at each of the Houston area law schools: South Texas College of Law, Texas Southern University--Thurgood Marshall School of Law, and the University of Houston Law Center. HisBA has awarded well over $100,000 dollars in scholarship monies over the past ten years to deserving students. Currently, HisBA awards about $20,000 in scholarship monies every year. The following is a list of our current scholarship offerings:

Eligibility and Applications

All law students are eligible to apply for the aforementioned scholarships as long as they are members in good standing of their respective school's Hispanic law student association, all of which are open to students regardless of race or ethnicity. Interested students can download the applications below or consult with their respective school's Hispanic law student association for an application.

First Year Scholarship (1L)

HisBA awards three First Year Scholarships in the amount of $1,500 to one law student at each of the three local area law schools. 1Ls may apply for the scholarship during the Spring semester of their first year. HisBA awards these scholarships at its President's Day Gala in May.

James DeAnda Scholarship (2L)

The James DeAnda Scholarship is named after the Honorable Judge James DeAnda, the late Chief Judge for the U.S. Southern District of Texas and one of HisBA's most distinguished members. HisBA awards three James DeAnda Scholarships in the amount of $3,000 to one law student at each of the three local area law schools.
2Ls may apply for the scholarship during the Spring semester of their 2nd year. Students are selected and the scholarships are awarded at the President's Day Gala in May.

Third Year Bar Review Scholarship (3L)

HisBA annually awards six Third Year Bar Review Scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each to two law students at each of the three local area law schools. This scholarship is used to defray the costs associated with preparation for the bar exam. 3Ls graduating in either May or December may apply during the Spring semester of their 3rd year. Students are selected and the scholarships are awarded at the President's Day Gala in May.
