Judicial Luncheon
The day began with the Annual President’s Day Judicial Luncheon on May 12, 2011 at noon at the Magnolia Hotel in downtown Houston. This year’s guest speaker was the Honorable Michael Gomez, who was sworn in as Judge of the 129th District Court in January 2009. Judge Gomez was raised in Houston and attended Rice University where he served as president of the Hispanic Student's Association (HACER). Upon graduation, Judge Gomez attended the University of Houston Law Center, which allowed him to volunteer for the political asylum project (PROBAR). He also clerked for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund and served as the articles editor for the prestigious Houston Law Review. During his tenure as President of the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston, Judge Gomez championed Houston's first ever "Diversity Report Card" which assessed the amount and roles of minority attorney's within Houston’s twenty one largest law firms. Now, as a current, experienced judge, Judge Gomez continues his commitment to professional and community service—as a volunteer, a mentor, and an advocate.
