As we enter
our 20th year of existence, the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston currently administers three different scholarship
programs--one for each class year--at each of the Houston area law schools, including South Texas College of
Law, Thurgood Marshall School of Law, and the University of Houston Law Center. All told, HISBA has awarded well over
$100,000 dollars is scholarship monies over the past ten years to deserving students and currently awards about $20,000
in scholarship monies every year. The following is a list of our current scholarship offerings:
First Year Scholarship (1L)
HISBA annually awards three First Year Scholarships in the amount of $1,500
each to one law student at each of the three local area law schools.
1Ls may apply for the scholarship during
September of their first year. Students are selected in early October and the scholarships are awarded at HISBA's
Annual Officer's and Director's Installation in mid-October.
James
deAnda Scholarship (2L)
The James deAnda Scholarhship is named after Judge James deAnda, the late Chief Judge for the U.S. Southern
District of Texas and one of the organization's most distinguished members. HISBA annually awards three
James deAnda Scholarships in the amount of $3,000 each to one law student at each of the
three local area law schools.
2Ls may apply for the scholarship during March and April of their 2nd year. Students are selected in
late April and the scholarships are awarded at HISBA's Annual President's Day Banquet in mid-May.
Third Year Bar Review Scholarship (3L)
HISBA
annually awards three Third Year Bar Review Scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each
to one law student at each of the three local area law schools. The monies are used to defray the costs associated
with preparation for the bar exam.
3Ls may apply for the scholarship during March and April of their 3rd year. Students are
selected in late April and the scholarships are awarded at HISBA's Annual President's Day Banquet in mid-May.
Eligibility and Applications
All law students
are eligible to apply for the aforemention scholarships as long as they are members in good standing of their respective school's
Hispanic law students association (which are open to all students regardless of race or ethnicity). Interested students should consult with their respective school's Hispanic law student
association for an application and more information regarding these scholarships. Or, you can contact the following
